New Edition of ILO/IEA Ergonomics Checkpoints - Update 2009
This month I had the pleasure to preview the 2nd Edition of the popular publication "Ergonomics Checkpoints". The first edition was published in 1996 and has been one of the most sought after publications for the ILO and has been translated into many languages. Under the leadership of Kazutaka Kogi from Japan, the 2nd Edition is nearing completion and we welcome its launch in 2009 – hopefully at the IEA Congress. This is a wonderful outreach from the ILO in partnership with the IEA to present practical ergonomics resources and advice to the community.

Série Etudes et recherches - Outils pour comprendre le vieillissement au travail, Nouvelle brochure du SPF Emploi, Travail et Concertation sociale
Plusieurs enjeux sont à l’œuvre en ce qui concerne l’âge au travail : stress, dépression, formation des seniors, raisons des départs anticipés… Cette brochure a pour objectif de proposer des éléments de réflexion afin de mieux cerner ces enjeux. Elle a été rédigée dans le cadre du projet CAPA " Evolution des capacités physiques et physiologiques en fonction de l'âge dans la population au travail ", avec le soutien du Fonds social européen et du SPF Emploi, Travail et Concertation sociale. Il s’agit de la deuxième brochure issue de ce projet; la première, intitulée « Réponses aux stéréotypes concernant le travailleur plus âgé », a été publiée en 2006. L'approche scientifique a été assurée par un partenariat entre l'Université catholique de Louvain, les Facultés universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix de Namur et l'Université de Gand. Deux services externes de prévention et de protection au travail ont réalisé l'enquête sur le terrain.

Reeks Studies en onderzoeken - Hulpmiddelen om meer inzicht te krijgen in het ouder worden op het werk, nieuwe brochure van het FOD WASO
Meerdere uitdagingen zijn in het spel op het domein van leeftijd en werk : stress, depressie, vorming voor oudere werknemers, redenen van vervroegd vertrek… Deze brochure heeft tot doel een aantal elementen van bezinning voor te stellen om beter de problemen van het ouder worden op het werk te begrijpen. Ze werd opgemaakt in het kader van het CAPA- project "Evolutie van de fysieke en fysiologische capaciteiten in functie van leeftijd in de beroepsbevolking", met de steun van het Europees Sociaal Fonds en de Federale Overheidsdienst Werkgelegenheid, Arbeid en Sociaal Overleg. Het gaat om de tweede brochure van dat project; de eerste, met als titel "Antwoord op de stereotypen betreffende de oudere werknemer", werd gepubliceerd in 2006. De wetenschappelijke benadering werd gewaarborgd door een partenariaat tussen de Universiteit Gent, de Facultés universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix de Namur en de Université Catholique de Louvain. Twee externe diensten voor preventie en bescherming op het werk hebben de enquête op het terrein uitgevoerd.

Risk assessment of biomechanical damage risks in small and medium-sized enterprises, European Trade Union Institute ETUI
This joint study, co-published by the ETUI, reviews the musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) that workers in SMEs can face. MSDs are very much an agenda-topping issue, and are addressed in a practical and innovative way in Belgium, Spain and Italy through action-oriented risk assessments. A holistic, participatory and multidisciplinary approach is taken to assessing so-called biomechanical risks and work situations to produce practical solutions to the problems faced by workers and businesses. Profusely illustrated, the study puts forward practical options derived from the daily experience of working in the highly specific smaller firm environment

How much does a human factors and ergonomics professional earn in the US?
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) has surveyed its members through emails during April 2009 to obtain information about monetary compensations along with non-monetary benefits of its members presumably working in the field of HF&E. The results recently published in a HFES report, reveal interesting information about this professions compensation. According to this study human factors professionals average salaries ranged from a low $88K in the Mid-central to a high $118K in the Northwest region of the US and vary little by market sector with a slight advantage in the for profit industry. The full report is available online at hfes.org. The full report provides breakdowns of salary by employment size, market sector, highest degree earned, and time in position. Demographic information on the respondents is also reported.
